How to use the short version of gustar in Spanish

Using the "Short" Variant of Gustar

In everyday Spanish, the "short" variant of gustar is far more commonly used. While the full structure (a + pronoun/name + indirect object pronoun) helps you understand how gustar works, native speakers rarely include the a + pronoun unless they want to add emphasis or clarify who is being referred to. Instead, they simply use the indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, nos, os, les) before the verb.

For example:

  • Me gusta el café. (I like coffee.)
  • Nos gustan los libros. (We like books.)

These shorter forms are more natural and efficient, and they are the ones you will use most often in conversations.

Why Learn the "Long" Variant First?

In the exercises, we are focusing on the "long" variant because it shows you how gustar operates "under the hood." Understanding the relationship between the subject (the thing being liked) and the indirect object (the person who likes it) is crucial for mastering this verb and others like it, such as encantar ("to love"), interesar ("to interest"), and molestar ("to bother").

For example:

  • A mí me gusta el café. (I like coffee.)
  • A ellos les gustan las películas. (They like movies.)

By practicing the full structure, you’ll develop a strong foundation. Once you're comfortable with how gustar works, you'll naturally transition to the more concise forms.
