'She' as a linking verb and possessions

Introduction in Manx (Gaelg)

'She' as a linking verb and possessions

She … eshyn/ish literally means “it is … he/she” and is the way to say “he/she is …”. For example: She Juan eshyn = He is Juan. The word she works here as a linking verb (it is) instead of ta.

With family words, you’ll see initial mutations again when showing possession:

  • mummig (mom) → my vummig (my mom)
  • jishag (dad) → my yishag (my dad)
  • braar (brother) → my vraar (my brother)

Finally, there’s a difference in emphasis: eshyn is the stressed form for he/him, while ish is the stressed form for she/her.
