How to count to 10 in Manx

Introduction in Manx (Gaelg)

How to count to 10 in Manx

Numbers 1–10

In Manx you’ll use a unique set of words for the basic numbers. Some may remind you of English or other Celtic languages, but they have their own forms and sounds.

  • Nane = one
  • Jees = two
  • Tree = three
  • Kiare = four
  • Queig = five
  • Shey = six
  • Shiaght = seven
  • Hoght = eight
  • Nuy = nine
  • Jeih = ten

Note: the word jees (two) is used when simply counting (nane, jees, tree…). But when “two” comes directly before a noun, it changes to daa. Example: jees = “two” when counting, but daa lioar = “two books.”
