Using cha nel for negations in Manx

Foundations I in Manx (Gaelg)

Using cha nel for negations in Manx

So far you have learned how to use ta to say what something is:

  • Ta mee skee = I am tired.

But of course, you will often also want to say what something is not. For that, Manx uses a special form: cha nel.

You can think of cha nel as the negative counterpart of ta.

  • Ta shiu skee = You (plural) are tired.
  • Cha nel shiu skee = You (plural) are not tired.

The structure is very simple: you just place cha nel in front of the pronoun (mee, oo, eh, ee, shin, shiu, ad).

With cha nel you can take any sentence you know with ta and turn it into a negative form.
