How to say where you're from in Italian?

Greetings & Small Talk in Italian

How to say where you're from in Italian?

Where? That's what dove means. And when talking about "where", we stumble upon an interesting bit of grammar.

Imagine you want to say "I live in Rome". In that case you would say vivo a Roma. But if you want to say "I live in Italy", you would say vivo in Italia.

In short, this is the rule:

  • in/to + city: a Roma
  • in/to + country: in Italia

Likewise, if you want to say you're from Rome, you would say: sono di Roma. Quite literally: I am from Rome.
