Greetings in German
Greetings
Learning how to greet people is one of the first steps in any language. In German, like most other languages, greetings can change depending on the time of day, and some are used more formally than others. For example, "Guten Morgen" means "Good morning" and is used until about 10 or 11 a.m. "Guten Tag" is a general greeting for the day, and "Hallo" is a friendly, informal way to say hello. In southern Germany and Austria, you might hear "Grüß Gott" as a regional greeting. Using the right greeting helps you sound natural and polite in any situation!
Here's a quick overview of some common greetings:
German | English |
---|---|
